DAN VOLLMER

Author of CROSSING AMERICA by WATER

Dan Vollmer has been messing about with boats all his life, beginning at age fifteen when he attempted to build a kayak in his basement of his parents’ house and had to remove a window casing to get it out. He has always had dreams of crossing vast oceans to exotic lands.  While serving our country in the US Navy he managed to travel half way around the world before the age of twenty-one, but that didn’t quench his thirst for water adventures.

During his 26-year career in golf course maintenance (20 years as a head superintendent) he pursued his hobby of boating, owning almost every kind of watercraft possible at one time or another, from kayaks and canoes to powerboats and sailboats.  It was during those years that the plan to cross America by water was conceived.  Fortunately his wife Marilyn shared his love for boating and travel.

In 1988 he left the golf course and devoted full time to the dream.  His plan was to cross every line of longitude on water from the Pacific to the Atlantic using whatever type of watercraft appropriate to the lakes and rivers needed to accomplish his goal.

He began to write stories about their adventures and sold several articles to regional boating and travel magazines. His first self-published book, CROSSING AMERICA by WATER, documents their adventures while finishing the western half of the USA.  His second book, Toy Boats, is a collection of the best of the many short stores that Dan and his wife Marilyn have written over the years.

Dan works full-time promoting the books, writing and making plans for their ongoing adventure of rediscovery toward the eastern states and the Atlantic Ocean.
