Loren Robinson

I got into writing by accident. Growing up in the small logging town of Priest River, Idaho, I figured my future was as a lumberjack. World War II changed that. College on the GI Bill showed me there was a better way. I never left the woods entirely; I came back as a forester and after 13 years, looked for another change.

Writing came along when I volunteered work for “Project Read.” I taught writing and reading to adults who didn’t think school was worthwhile in their youth. One student assigned to me was a paraplegic, a high school graduate who wanted to become a writer. In order to help him, I had to learn the fundamentals first. I enrolled in a writing class sponsored by the community college. That was my start.

With trial and error and tearing up paper, I finally put together a novel. I called a literary agent in town and he did more editing, and then presented it to Books in Motion, producer of audio books. It was a trial run. I was told if it took on the audio market, they might ask for another. This was in 1986. Since then I have had 24 books published on tape and am working on number 25.

Joining a writer’s critique group has helped enormously. Without their help, I would never have improved.
