Lawrence E. Hall

WRITERS TOOL - THE COMPUTER

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Lawrence E. Hall’s first computer experience was with the giant computers of the 1950's. Boards with wires leading from one hole to another hole on the boards programmed the computers. Input to the computers was by reading holes in punched cards - a special card about three inches by six inches in size, with one corner cut off and with holes which meant data.

Smaller computers with one color display came years later. The author's first personal computer was a 1983 suitcase size Osborne with a tiny built-in one-color screen, two large floppy disk drives and just 64 kilobits of memory. Computers with immense capability and color display arrived years later. The author used a modern multi-colored screen laptop to write this book.

WRITERS TOOL - THE COMPUTER was inspired from many years of using a personal computer to    write various materials and particularly the experience of writing published novels Montana Justice and Abuse of Power. While writing of these books and several items, procedures were developed using the wonderful capabilities of a computer to eliminate much of the "non-creative, tedious, routine, repetitive and mechanical tasks" of writing.

The two published novels - Montana Justice and Abuse of Power, this book and several in progress are based on the business experience of sixty years and personal life of eighty years, which included extensive travel, both business and personal, to most areas of the United States and part of Canada.

For almost two decades the author was an executive responsible for pubic affairs and public relations of a Wall Street listed corporation. The author who personally wrote much of the top corporate items, supervised personnel involved in writing the many various types of items for the corporation.

The first few years after early retirement from the corporate life in 1983 much time was spent handling affairs of his ownership interest in several small corporations and a partnership.

From early youth to present time, the reading of all types of books has been major part of his life. After several years of retirement his interests turned to writing mainly for his own enjoyment.

His writing is done in Spokane, Washington during summer months and during winter months in sunny Mesa, Arizona. Support and inspiration for writing is from his wife Gloria who has shared his life for 59 years.

Born in San Diego, California, he spent early childhood in Southern and Central California. Onset of the "Great Depression" triggered the move of parents to Ashland, Oregon, the now famous Shakespeare Performing Arts Town in Southern Oregon. After serving in the Navy for three years during World War II, he was first with the United States Army Corps of Engineers for six and half years and then with the State of Washington for three years. The government service utilized his training as an engineer to plan the design, construction and operation of hydroelectric power projects in the Pacific Northwest

Moving on to the corporate world, for twenty-six years he was with Puget Sound Power & Light Co. in the State of Washington. Early corporate activities were engineering oriented but soon led to a variety of executive positions before retiring in 1983.
