Lee Dominey

I always wanted to write The Great American Novel, i.e. one that sells like Stephen King’s, but long ago found that writing advertising copy was a lot easier and paid just fine. That’s what I’ve been doing for some 30+ years – since I left Portland, Oregon and moved to Houston as a single mom with 2 kids.

In 1994, I semi-retired and left Houston to come to Spokane, back to God’s country! It reminds me of my New England childhood, complete with 4 real seasons and lots of trees. Now I play with my grandkids and friends, travel a lot, and write heart-warming articles for a few Spokane hospitals and medical clinics, plus do copywriting and graphic coordination for Houston clients who include metal building component manufacturers and geophysical equipment manufacturers.

Several years ago when I was visiting a son who lives in France, my French daughter-in-law said, “Oh, you Americans have no history!” That thought, plus the fact that my children and nieces and nephews are scattered thousands of miles apart and know nothing of their common background, triggered the desire to write a history of my family. After five years of research, writing, re-writing and general commotion, Carrick Chronicles: Tales of a New England Family was born. This 228-page opus just came off the press and has been sent to a dozen family members.

It was because of this ongoing effort that I joined SASP when it began in mid-1998. I wanted to know more about the mechanics of publishing, and to spend time with others who were doing the same thing. And what a trip it’s been!! I’ve learned a lot, laughed many times, made good friends and generally had a wonderful time. And gotten quite computer literate in the process! Now, thanks to Tim, I expect to get e-book literate as well…
