GOODBYE TO ELMER FREEMAN
OUR SALUTE TO YOU, OLD FRIEND By Charles E. O’Connor
Your passing was so hard today, it came on fast, old friend. So much that’s left unsaid, undone, no time to comprehend, Or understand our friendships, warm, and why we feel so keen, To know about your storied life, the varied sides we’ve seen. And feel your droll and quirky wit, the way you weave a tale Or see a warm and fuzzy side, some critic to assail. We’ve had great times and told tall tales, a Chardonnay or two. And lied a bit, to help the plot, from our readers’ point of view. Those Navy Guys – Their PBYs our champion to the end. You’ve showed us how, and led the way, and done it well, old friend. The PBY’s a metaphor for a Freeman kind of life. Of sturdy stock, but sleek and strong to take on any strife. Dependable, a joy to fly, a plane of many lines. And so it was, the Freeman life that paralleled those times, A father and a husband, with a family strong and proud, Of the Dad that did the best he could and stood above the crowd. A writer and an author with a style that’s bright and breezy. You taught us how to self-publish and made it seem so easy. Your life lives on within us all, your wisdom we commend, Your friendship is our legacy, WE SALUTE YOU, DEAR OLD FRIEND. |
