New Meeting Location!
(See
inside for details!)
Spokane
Authors and Self-Publishers (SASP) began
in 1998 when Chuck O’Conner, Elmer Freeman, Joe Meiners, and Dan Vollmer,
Spokane area authors formed a club in order to share their knowledge and
experience with those interested in writing and alternative ways of
publishing. Today, SASP is a large
non-profit organization dedicated to anyone with interests in any aspect of
writing and art. Members now include
aspiring (and successful) authors, poets, journalists, illustrators, editors,
publishers, printers, writing instructors, and many others. Monthly luncheon meetings provide inspiration
and education by way of knowledgeable and entertaining guest speakers, and the
cheerful camaraderie of people sharing common interests and goals. Membership is open to all who love writing,
art, and interesting people.
Spokane
Authors and Self-Publishers meets
the first Thursday of each month at Timber
Creek Grill and Buffet, located at:
(509)
892-6390
Speakers’
presentations begin at NOON. The room opens at 11:00 AM to allow members and guests to dine, converse, join, pay
dues, browse, and perhaps buy other member’s books that are on display. Generally a short business meeting is held,
either before or after the formal presentation.
New members and guests are introduced, members relate their
accomplishments, and various door prizes are awarded.
All
members and guests are requested to buy lunch upon entering the establishment,
and to leave an appropriate tip for the waiter/waitress.
Members
need to be present to win door prizes.
Current
membership benefits include a
listing on the SASP website, www.spokaneauthors.org. Many
members provide short biographies and links to external personal websites,
creating more marketing exposure.
Current members may list and describe their published works on the SASP
website and offer their work for sale at meetings.
Guest speakers at our monthly meetings
inform, inspire, and entertain members and guests with a variety of topics, all
designed to provide knowledge pertinent to writing and publishing.
SASP
members are encouraged to purchase or trade completed works of and with fellow
members. They are also encouraged to
donate examples of their work for use as door prizes. Those who win other members’ works are
expected to provide a review of that work.
Dues for SASP membership are $15.00 per calendar
year. Dues may be paid directly to our Treasurer at our monthly
meetings. Alternatively, you may remit
your dues to:

February
2012
At our most recent meeting local author Jessica
Titchenal offered us several publishing tips designed to prevent us from
“shooting ourselves in the foot.”
Adhering to her well crafted advice should prevent any writer from
letting disappointment lead to inappropriate and unprofessional actions.
We
welcomed new member Cheri Palmer, her husband Jason, and returning member Jim
Stinson. His book chronicling the
history of the State “B” basketball tournament is in its final stages of
production. Pat Freeman brought
brochures on writing classes at the
Dave
announced that since we are into the new calendar year, annual dues are due if
not already paid. Furthermore he stated
that the provided three month grace period would be extended through the time
of our April meeting. After that time,
members who are not paid for 2012 will be dropped from the membership list on
the web-site.
At
our previous meeting it had been announced that some other group had been
scheduled in our usual slot for May. In
an attempt to find an alternative site or activity for that month, Dave had approached
the Spokane Club to see if they would be interested in hosting some sort of
writing event that month. The response
from the club was favorable, with the suggestion of doing something in
conjunction with the annual GET LIT celebration. While the meeting situation for SASP has
changed, a show of hands indicated that members of the group might still be
interested in doing a mass signing or reading at the Spokane Club. At this point, nothing is set, but with a bit
of correspondence, something could be arranged.
With
the sudden closure of Old Country Buffet
late last month, SASP scrambled to find a suitable meeting place. Based on the recommendation of one of our
members, we were able to get scheduled into Timber Creek Grill and Buffet for our February meeting. The thought at that time was to meet there
one time and see about finding someplace else as a permanent site. We
were happy enough with the accommodations that we decided to continue gathering
at Timber Creek.
Door
prizes were in plentiful supply once again.
Robert Pillsbury won a ten dollar check from SASP. Dave McChesney donated the final working copy
of Beyond the Ocean’s Edge which was
won by Esther Hildahl. Dave also
provided copies of some paintings.
“Hotchkiss’ Paradox,” the cover art for his forthcoming book now belongs
to Anne Washington. Three other
paintings with a Chevrolet Corvair theme went to Don Williams, Anna Goodwin,
and Richard Smith. Pat Freeman gave up a
copy of Satin Gloves and Other Surprises. It had been edited by Pat and Virginia
White. Joan Carter had the winning
ticket for this prize. Jim Parry donated
a copy of The Spirit Stills the Storm
by “Sam” Lien Le, and Wally Parker left with it in his possession. Finally Lee Moore provided more of her unique
handcrafted items. Bob Hildahl and Mike
Marsden each departed with artistic pendants.
On
March 1st we will again be at Timber Creek Grill and Buffet. Our scheduled speaker will be Shann Ferch of

FOR WHAT
IT’S WORTH
(Jim, I hope you don’t mind me borrowing the title of your previous
editorial columns.)
As
most of you may know, Jim Parry has stepped down as editor of the SASP
Newsletter in order to devote more time to a second book. We had a volunteer for the job, but our
change in meeting location has that individual feeling that regular attendance
and proper performance of editorial duties would prove difficult.
So
now I’m playing interim editor, trying to put something together, and get it
out before our upcoming meeting.
Hopefully you will receive it, either by US Mail, e-mail, or discover it
on the web-site in time to remind you of our next meeting.
I
don’t mind doing this month’s issue of SASP NEWS for you, but I don’t want to
end up doing it on a regular basis.
Therefore, I’ll once again put out the call for a volunteer. Does anyone want the editor’s job? It’s not hard. If you have a computer, e-mail and internet
access, a printer, and can to take hard copies to the post office for mailing,
you have what it takes. E-mail the
completed issue to me and I will forward to the rest of the membership and
place on our web-site. Much of the
content remains the same from issue to issue, and I supply much of the
remainder. As with the new policy
announced a couple of months ago, the editor will be exempt from dues for the
2012 calendar year. (If you’ve already
paid, you will be good for the following year.)
SASP will also reimburse you for paper, postage, and ink, once or twice
a year.

Hurrah! JUSTICE FORBIDDEN, my psychological
thriller, murder mystery is finally out.
You can get it on my website www.anaparkergoodwin.com for 20% off the regular price of
$13.50. 10% of my profits will go to
counseling abused children. You can also get it at Barnes and Noble or Amazon. The ISBN is:

What is the story
about? Of course it’s all about what I know best. I am a psychotherapist who had a private practice
for many years. Although the plot is
fictional, the character of the client and much of her past is based on true
events.
What are the facts
about memory? Are there false memories?
Can memories be repressed and then remembered years later? This is one
of the greatest controversies still raging in psychology today.
Dr. Faythe
Bradington, Clinical Psychologist, is shocked to discover that an ex-client is
suing her for implanting false memories of childhood abuse. Faythe rushes to her office to read her
files, but when she arrives she discovers a body in the waiting room. Now
terrified, she calls 911. To make her
situation worse, her insurance company insists she settle out of court. There will be no justice for her unless she
discovers what actually happened to her ex-client 25 years ago. Determined to clear her name and discover the
truth, she hires a private investigator, who unknown to her has psychic powers
that become crucial in solving the case. As Faythe and L.P. probe into her
ex-client’s haunted past, they discover dark secrets so ominous that just
knowing them will set off unstoppable deadly events.
Read the book, leave a comment at my
website, at Amazon and Barnes and Noble, and then pass the book to someone else
you know would enjoy it. If you want me to do the same for your book send me an
e-mail: jargoodwin@msn.com. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful
group. Let’s cooperate and help each other reach our writing dreams.
